Hungary evacuates citizens, shuts Tehran embassy

(MENAFN) Hungary has evacuated six of its nationals and suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran due to rising security threats stemming from the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, the country's foreign minister announced on Thursday.

According to Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, the move followed careful preparation after the situation in Iran worsened amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes. With Iranian airspace closed and travel options limited, the evacuation was conducted by land through neighboring Azerbaijan.

In addition to the evacuated civilians, Hungary also withdrew its diplomatic staff and their families—totaling 15 people, including children—from the embassy in Tehran.

The embassy will remain closed until conditions improve. For now, its diplomatic responsibilities will be handled from Azerbaijan.

"This decision was necessary to ensure the safety of our staff and their families," Szijjarto said.

The evacuation comes in the wake of Israeli airstrikes launched on June 13, targeting Tehran and other cities in Iran, which resulted in the deaths of high-ranking military officers and nuclear experts. Iran responded by launching missile attacks against several sites in Israel, causing casualties and widespread damage.

So far, official figures estimate that the conflict has claimed the lives of nearly 600 people in Iran and 24 in Israel.
